Symptoms of Heart Attacks in Women

Believe it or not, women often times have different symptoms than men when they are having a heart attack.

  • You could be having a heart attack if you feel pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. If It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back, then you should probably call 9-1-1.
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or becoming light headed.

As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort; however, women are more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea and or back or jaw pain.

You Can Prevent Heart Disease

Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to learn about your personal risk for heart disease.

  • If you quit smoking you cut your chances of acquiring heart disease almost in half.
  • Develop an exercise program. Walking at least thirty minutes a day can lower your risk for heart attack and stroke.
  • Modify your diet if needed, and cut down on your red meat consumption. Try using more poultry and fish instead.
